Members of Bolivia’s Aymara Indigenous community climbed the sacred hill of Inca Pucará on the outskirts of La Paz to pray for rain. The devout residents said they desperately needed rainfall for their harvests. Roxana Alejo, an Aymara leader of rural communities in La Paz, said it had not rained since the year before and that they would need to perform this ritual more often as the rain became scarcer. The farming community depends on potatoes, beans, carrots, quinoa and peas, all part of their traditional diet. An evangelical pastor led the prayers in the Inca ruins near Lake Titicaca. Authorities expect rain in December, but in the meantime, they have called on the population to save water.
