Rescue operations helped people trapped in submerged cars after Messina in Sicily was battered by heavy rain and flooding. In the S. Antonio district of Barcellona-Pozzo di Gotto, streets transformed into rivers. Mayors urged residents to stay in their homes in municipalities hit by the flooding.
